When we embark on the path of green transformation, we too often forget that climate targets and European strategies have little real meaning unless we, as people, stand at the heart of this process – with all our curiosity, experience and interconnectedness. It was precisely this genuine human warmth, heartfelt spirit and deep sense of collaboration that the international project SustiBridge (Sustaining Civic Bridges Across Generations for Inclusive EU Green Policies) captured in its rich three-day online mosaic.

Coordinated with dedication and genuine commitment by the Association for Developing Voluntary Work Novo mesto (DRPD Novo mesto), the project brought together more than 180 unique participants from eight European countries over the three days – Slovenia, Greece, Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania and Belgium. On average, around 70 people joined each day, with some enthusiastically following the programme throughout all three days. Looking back at these three unforgettable events, what unfolds before us is a rich tapestry of human stories, warm smiles, professional knowledge and genuine human connection – something that reaches far beyond the cold confines of bureaucratic green strategies.

Throughout the three-day programme, the event was connected by Milica Tanasković, who, despite occasional technical challenges, carried out her role exceptionally well, ensuring a smooth flow of the programme and a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Day One: Good Practices, Activism and Green Policies

The opening day of the three-day marathon, entitled Good Practices, Activism and Green Policies, began with a warm welcome from project manager Ester Snedec. Combining professionalism with genuine human warmth, she created a safe and welcoming atmosphere each day, making participants feel heard and valued.

In her opening remarks, she highlighted the project’s central guiding principle: the green transition must be shaped together with citizens, hand in hand with local communities, rather than simply imposed upon them by policymakers as a rigid decree from European bureaucrats. She stressed the importance of bridging the gap between the ambitious objectives of the European Green Deal and the reality of people’s everyday lives, as too many citizens still feel uninformed about the policies that will shape their future.

A series of outstanding speakers then took the floor.

Barbara Turk from Grm Novo mesto – Centre of Biotechnics and Tourism spoke enthusiastically about short food supply chains, local food self-sufficiency and the journey of produce from local fields directly to our plates in her presentation entitled Flavours from Our Fields. Her words evoked the scent of freshly harvested vegetables and reminded participants that sustainability begins with respecting local farmers and consciously reducing our reliance on global food supply chains that place a significant burden on the environment.

Dr Lejla Imamović Lerić also shared her perspective, focusing with remarkable empathy and professional insight on how people in vulnerable situations – who are too often overlooked – can actively participate in shaping green policies. She emphasised that a truly inclusive society leaves no one behind and that green policies must also address the social security and well-being of the most vulnerable.

The first day concluded with an inspiring presentation by Sonam Latsho, who introduced the Plastic Pirates initiative and presented field activities and scientifically supported research into aquatic ecosystems. She vividly described how young people can become active guardians of the environment through direct exploration of rivers and nature, bringing the opening day to a close with a sense of fresh air, curiosity and direct connection with the natural world.

Day Two: Intergenerational Wisdom and Innovation

The second day brought a genuine emotional and participatory highlight, focusing on the central theme of intergenerational wisdom and innovation.

There was a particular sense of excitement as the organisers raised a key question: do we really need to reinvent sustainability every time, or could we simply look to the wisdom and past practices of those who came before us – people who lived in harmony with nature for decades?

The central and unforgettable speaker of the second day was Roman Kapš, a retired electrical engineer, who shared his authentic perspective on sustainable living at the micro level. He emphasised that he belongs to a generation that treated every resource with great care because things were simply not made to be quickly thrown away.

He shared personal photographs with the audience – from a motorbike he had modified himself to his creative work using a 3D printer – and, with simple, down-to-earth humour, demonstrated that resourcefulness, repairing broken appliances instead of buying new ones, and helping one another within the neighbourhood are values that we urgently need to pass on to younger generations.

The second day’s programme continued with a contribution from Jošt Derlink, co-founder and head of Knjižnica reči, who presented the sharing economy as an exceptionally practical solution for modern life. He explained how people within local communities can borrow tools, sports equipment and household items, thereby significantly reducing unnecessary purchases, plastic consumption and the amount of waste they generate.

The programme continued with Karmen Zaletelj, a secondary-school student, who presented, on behalf of her teacher Žiga Longar, the integration of sustainable mobility into the education system through practical school projects. She demonstrated how students use smart applications and organised walks to learn about the benefits of sustainable travel to school, and how young people themselves are developing ideas for cleaner and healthier urban environments.

The exchange of views among participants from all eight countries demonstrated that older generations bring calmness, experience and the wisdom of knowing how to make things last, while younger generations contribute dynamic digital energy. Together, these strengths form an unbreakable bridge towards the future.

Day Three: Innovative and Inclusive Green Solutions

The final, third day of the gathering was entitled Innovative and Inclusive Green Solutions and was filled with gratitude for the moments shared, deep reflection and a firm commitment to continuing the work.

At the opening of the final day, project manager Ester Snedec once again brought the key ideas together and summarised the essence of the entire week with a moving statement: green solutions are truly sustainable only when they are fully accessible, practical and inclusive for people of all generations, people with different abilities, social backgrounds and life circumstances.

Her words reinforced the conviction that digital progress and the green transition must not exclude anyone or leave anyone behind.

The programme continued with Peter Geršič from the Municipality of Novo mesto, Head of the Office for Digital and Sustainable Development, who delivered an in-depth presentation entitled Sustainability for All: How to Design Green Services That Are Accessible to Everyone. He highlighted the key challenges facing modern cities, stressing that the green and digital transitions must not create new forms of digital or social exclusion for older people and vulnerable groups. He also presented four fundamental principles for designing public services that serve every citizen.

The final speaker was Simona Pavlin from the Novo mesto Education Centre, who presented a range of highly practical tools, interactive platforms and digital innovations designed to support adults in developing green and entrepreneurial skills.

The entire three-day event concluded in an atmosphere of warmth, with a group photograph and a quiet yet unwavering commitment from everyone present that the bonds, friendships and ideas woven between participants from Slovenia, Greece, Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania and Belgium will continue to live on and bear fruit through future activities of the SustiBridge project.

Координиран с всеотдайност и истинска ангажираност от Association for Developing Voluntary Work Novo mesto (DRPD Ново место), проектът събра над 180 уникални участници от осем европейски държави през трите дни – Словения, Гърция, Италия, Унгария, България, Хърватия, Литва и Белгия. Средно около 70 души се присъединяваха всеки ден, като някои от тях с ентусиазъм следяха програмата през всичките три дни. Поглеждайки назад към тези три незабравими събития, пред нас се разкрива богата плетеница от човешки истории, топли усмивки, професионални знания и истинска човешка връзка – нещо, което далеч надхвърля студените рамки на бюрократичните зелени стратегии.

По време на тридневната програма събитието беше водено от Milica Tanasković, която, въпреки случайните технически предизвикателства, изпълняваше изключително добре своята роля, осигурявайки гладко протичане на програмата и топла и приветлива атмосфера.

Ден първи: Добри практики, активизъм и зелени политики

Barbara Turk от Grm Ново Место- Център за биотехника и туризъм, представи с ентусиазъм темите за късите хранителни вериги, местната продоволствена самодостатъчност и пътя на храната от местните полета директно до нашата трапеза в презентацията си „Flavours from Our Fields“ („Вкусове от нашите полета“).Нейното представяне напомни на участниците, че устойчивостта започва с уважение към местните производители и с осъзнато намаляване на зависимостта ни от глобалните вериги за доставка на храни, които оказват значително въздействие върху околната среда.

Д-р Lejla Imamović Lerić също сподели своята гледна точка, като с професионализъм и силна чувствителност постави акцент върху това как хората в уязвимо положение, които твърде често остават пренебрегнати, могат активно да участват във формирането на зелените политики. Тя подчерта, че едно действително приобщаващо общество не оставя никого назад и че зелените политики трябва да отчитат и социалната сигурност и благосъстоянието на най-уязвимите.

Първият ден завърши с вдъхновяваща презентация на Sonam Latsho, която представи инициативата Plastic Pirates, както и теренни дейности и научно подкрепени изследвания на водните екосистеми. Вторият ден донесе един от най-емоционалните и интерактивни моменти в програмата, като постави във фокуса темата за междупоколенческата мъдрост и иновациите.

Особен интерес предизвика ключовият въпрос, поставен от организаторите: Наистина ли всеки път трябва да преоткриваме устойчивостта, или можем просто да се обърнем към знанията и практиките на поколенията преди нас – хора, които десетилетия наред са живели в по-тясна хармония с природата?

Главнияти запомнящ се лектор на втория ден беше Roman Kapš, пенсиониран електроинженер, който сподели своя автентичен поглед към устойчивия начин на живот на ежедневно, лично ниво. Той подчерта, че принадлежи към поколение, което се е отнасяло внимателно към всеки ресурс, защото вещите просто не са били създавани с идеята да бъдат бързо изхвърляни и заменяни.

Той показа лични снимки – от мотоциклет, който сам е модифицирал, до свои творчески проекти с 3D принтер и с непринудено чувство за хумор показа, че находчивостта, поправянето на счупени уреди вместо купуването на нови и взаимопомощта между хората в общността са ценности, които спешно трябва да предадем на по-младите поколения.

Програмата на втория ден продължи с участието на Jošt Derlink, съосновател и ръководител на Knjižnica reči, който представи икономиката на споделянето като изключително практично решение за съвременния живот. Той обясни как хората в местните общности могат да споделят и заемат инструменти, спортно оборудване и предмети за дома, като по този начин значително намаляват ненужните покупки, употребата на пластмаса и количеството генерирани отпадъци.

Програмата продължи с Karmen Zaletelj, ученичка от средно училище, която представи от името на своя учител Žiga Longarинтегрирането на устойчивата мобилност в образователната система чрез практически училищни проекти. Ден трети: Иновативни и приобщаващи зелени решения

Последният, трети ден на срещата беше посветен на темата „Иновативни и приобщаващи зелени решения“ и премина в атмосфера на благодарност за споделените моменти, задълбочен размисъл и ясна решимост работата да продължи.

В началото на заключителния ден ръководителят на проекта Ester Snedec отново обедини основните послания и обобщи същността на цялата тридневна програма с важно послание: зелените решения могат да бъдат истински устойчиви само когато са напълно достъпни, практични и приобщаващи за хора от всички поколения, с различни възможности, социален произход и житейски обстоятелства.

Нейните думи затвърдиха разбирането, че дигиталният напредък и зеленият преход не трябва да изключват никого и не бива да оставят хора или групи извън процеса.

Програмата продължи с Peter Geršič от Община Ново место, ръководител на отдела за дигитално и устойчиво развитие, който изнесе задълбочена презентация на тема „Sustainability for All: How to Design Green Services That Are Accessible to Everyone“ („Устойчивост за всички: Как да създаваме зелени услуги, достъпни за всеки“).Той очерта основните предизвикателства пред съвременните градове, като подчерта, че зеленият и дигиталният преход не трябва да създават нови форми на дигитално или социално изключване за възрастните хора и уязвимите групи. Hosted by ASOCIATIA A.S.E.L. RO, the festival welcomed participants representing municipalities, civil society organisations, and local communities, creating an inclusive environment where citizens could exchange ideas, strengthen international partnerships, and explore the future of European cooperation. The event reflected the overall mission of EU-THREAD: to strengthen citizens’ understanding of the European Union, encourage democratic participation, and foster a stronger sense of European identity through town twinning and intercultural dialogue.

The programme officially commenced with participants arriving in Bucharest, followed by welcome greetings and a networking dinner that offered an excellent opportunity for delegates to become acquainted and begin building relationships before the working sessions.

The second day featured a rich programme of presentations, discussions, and expert contributions. Following the official opening and presentation of the agenda, representatives from each partner country introduced their organisations and highlighted their commitment to promoting active citizenship, solidarity, and European cooperation. These introductory statements demonstrated the diversity of expertise within the consortium while reinforcing the shared vision that unites all partners under the EU-THREAD initiative.

Participants were then introduced to the EU-THREAD project through a presentation outlining its objectives, thematic priorities, and long-term vision. Discussions focused on the project’s eight thematic pillars, which address topics including civic participation, social inclusion, sustainability, innovation, youth empowerment, cultural diversity, mobility, and peace. These themes provided the foundation for meaningful exchanges throughout the event and highlighted the importance of cooperation between European communities.

Throughout the day, expert presentations explored some of the most pressing issues facing Europe today. Sessions examined the importance of strengthening European citizenship, empowering citizens to actively participate in democratic life, and reinforcing inclusive governance across the European Union. A policy expert further encouraged participants to reflect on the future of European democracy and the role that citizens play in shaping resilient and democratic societies.

One of the highlights of the festival was the interactive open discussion entitled “How Can the European Union Reconnect with Its Citizens at the Local Level?” Participants openly exchanged views on what European citizenship means today, the barriers that prevent citizens from participating in democratic processes, the importance of youth engagement, and practical actions that can strengthen solidarity and inclusion across Europe. The dialogue demonstrated the value of participatory approaches in ensuring that citizens’ voices contribute to European policy discussions and future initiatives.

The afternoon concluded with two high-level European presentations focusing on the significance of citizen participation for the future of Europe and the opportunities and challenges facing democracy today. These sessions encouraged participants to consider how local engagement can contribute to stronger democratic institutions and a more united Europe.

Beyond the formal programme, the cultural evening created valuable opportunities for intercultural exchange and networking. Participants shared experiences, traditions, and perspectives, reinforcing friendships and partnerships while celebrating the cultural diversity that characterises the European Union. Such informal exchanges played an equally important role in strengthening mutual understanding and building lasting international cooperation.

The final day included a study visit to Bucharest, where participants gained insights into local governance and decision-making structures. The visit enabled delegates to better understand how democratic processes operate at the local level while exchanging good practices that could be transferred to their own communities. The event concluded with a closing ceremony, during which participants reflected on the achievements of the festival and reaffirmed their commitment to continued European cooperation.

The EU-THREAD Citizens’ Debatable Festival successfully demonstrated how dialogue, cooperation, and citizen participation can strengthen European unity while respecting the diversity of local communities. By bringing together participants from five European countries, the event fostered meaningful discussions, encouraged active civic engagement, and reinforced the shared values that lie at the heart of the European project. The festival represented another important milestone in the implementation of EU-THREAD and further strengthened the partnerships that will continue working together towards a more democratic, inclusive, and connected Europe.

What will Europe look like in 2035?

This was the challenge for the participants of the second international event of the SustiBridge project, which took place in Budapest from 26 to 28 May.

Together with partners from 8 European countries, we searched for innovative solutions to real social and environmental challenges. Through working in international teams, creative workshops and exchanging good practices, we developed ideas for a more sustainable, inclusive and connected future.

We return with new knowledge, inspiration and valuable contacts that will help us continue to build bridges between people, communities and sustainable development.

We are pleased to share that the First Transnational Project Meeting of the Erasmus+ KA2 project “NextGen Citizen: Innovating Civic Learning for Tomorrow” was successfully held on 18–20 March 2026 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The “NextGen Citizen” project aims to enhance civic education and promote active citizenship among young people through innovative, digital, and non-formal learning approaches .

The successful completion of the first transnational meeting represents an important milestone, setting the groundwork for effective cooperation and impactful results throughout the project duration.

We look forward to the next steps and to sharing the progress and results of the project with a wider audience.

Successfully completed youth exchange “Bridges of Colour – Crafting Peace and Unity through Art”

We are happy to share that the youth exchange “Bridges of Colour” was successfully implemented from 15 to 21 February 2026 in Thessaloniki, Greece.

During the project, young people from different European countries came together to explore the power of art as a tool for dialogue, understanding, and peacebuilding. Through creative workshops, group activities, and intercultural exchange, participants had the opportunity to express themselves, share perspectives, and build a space of trust and cooperation.

✨ Throughout the mobility, participants:
▪️ developed teamwork and communication skills
▪️ deepened their understanding of European youth policies
▪️ created collective artworks reflecting themes of peace, unity, and cultural diversity
▪️ built new friendships and international connections

The project demonstrated how art can serve as a bridge between cultures, fostering empathy, solidarity, and active citizenship.

Радваме се да споделим, че второто транснационално партньорско срещу по проект “Digital Escape Rooms for Social Entrepreneurship” (2024-2-BG01-KA220-YOU-000292991), Erasmus+ Programme, се проведе успешно в периода 19–21 ноември в Монс, Белгия.

Представители на всички партньорски организации обсъдиха напредъка по проекта, текущото състояние на разработваните резултати, разпределението на задачите и следващите стъпки. Срещата допринесе за доразвиване на общата визия и за укрепване на ефективното сътрудничество между екипите.

We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the second Transnational Project Meeting under the project “Digital Escape Rooms for Social Entrepreneurship” (2024-2-BG01-KA220-YOU-000292991), Erasmus+ Programme. The meeting took place on 19–21 November in Mons, Belgium.

Representatives from all partner organisations reviewed the project progress, discussed the current state of the results in development, aligned responsibilities, and planned the next steps. The meeting helped strengthen collaboration and ensured a clear, shared direction for the upcoming phases of the project.

The purpose of these events was to raise awareness of the multiple environmental and social impacts of climate change at the local and global level and confirm that multiculturalism represents an important European heritage.

The events took place in each partner country (Slovenia, Serbia, Hungary, Italy, Bulgaria, and Greece) , bringing together relevant representatives of the target groups, including schools, civil society organizations, and the public and private sectors. Organizers ensured that a minimum of 8 participants per partner attended each event, with equal representation of women and men.

Key Conclusions Presented at the Multiplier Events

At these local events, key conclusions adopted at the international conference in Križevci were dispersed to the participants, emphasizing how local communities can contribute to achieving European goals. Among the most important conclusions are:

• Democratic values of the EU and citizen participation: The importance of including everyone—young people, women, men, and marginalized groups—in discussions on climate challenges was stressed to strengthen European values such as solidarity, equality, and human rights.
• Sustainability as a shared responsibility: Local communities play a key role in achieving global sustainability goals , and examples such as Križevci, which aims for climate neutrality by 2030, demonstrate how local initiatives align with the broader European Green Deal framework.
• Young people as key actors: Young people (18–30 years old) are actively involved in international discussions and the exchange of good practices , making them qualified to discuss EU policy issues and create a long-term impact on their communities.
• Healthy local food and sustainable agriculture: The importance of ecologically sustainable local agriculture was highlighted , which contributes to a smaller carbon footprint and strengthens community resilience , with the example of the “Zdravo Križevci” (Healthy Križevci) project.
• Multiculturalism and cross-sector cooperation: Cooperation between representatives of the public, private, and civil sectors and the exchange of good practices among the seven partner countries contribute to innovation and strengthening resilience to climate challenges.

These local events, whose dates and locations varied depending on the partner country , served as a platform for adopting the agreed conclusions and drawing up plans for implementing the project goals in their own municipalities and cities. Thus, the EU-ECO project has created a new basis for long-term cooperation and strengthening local actors in the development of a green society.

След успешното основно събитие, проведено в Крижевци, Хърватия, в периода 6–8 ноември 2025 г., партньорите по проекта EU-ECO продължиха да разпространяват целите и резултатите на проекта чрез организиране на мултиплициращи събития в шестте партньорски държави. Фондация „Кореняк“ проведе събитието на 26 ноември 2025 г. в София, България.

Целта на тези събития беше да повишат осведомеността относно многобройните екологични и социални въздействия на климатичните промени на местно и глобално ниво и да потвърдят, че мултикултурализмът представлява важна част от европейското наследство.

Събитията се проведоха във всяка партньорска държава (Словения, Сърбия, Унгария, Италия, България и Гърция), като обединиха представители на целевите групи, включително училища, организации на гражданското общество, както и представители на публичния и частния сектор. Организаторите гарантираха участие на минимум 8 участници от всеки партньор, с равно представителство на жени и мъже.

Основни заключения, представени на мултиплициращите събития

По време на тези местни събития ключовите заключения, приети на международната конференция в Крижевци, бяха предадени на участниците, като се подчерта как местните общности могат да допринесат за постигането на европейските цели. Сред най-важните заключения са:

Демократични ценности на ЕС и участие на гражданите: Подчертано беше значението на включването на всички — млади хора, жени, мъже и маргинализирани групи — в дискусиите за климатичните предизвикателства, с цел укрепване на европейските ценности като солидарност, равенство и човешки права.

Устойчивост като споделена отговорност: Местните общности играят ключова роля в постигането на глобалните цели за устойчивост, а примери като Крижевци, които се стремят към климатична неутралност до 2030 г., показват как местните инициативи се вписват в по-широката рамка на Европейския зелен пакт.

Младите хора като ключови актьори: Младите хора (18–30 години) активно участват в международни дискусии и обмен на добри практики, което ги квалифицира да обсъждат политики на ЕС и да оказват дългосрочно въздействие върху своите общности.

Здравословна местна храна и устойчиво земеделие: Подчертана беше важността на екологично устойчивото местно земеделие, което допринася за по-малък въглероден отпечатък и укрепва устойчивостта на общността, като пример беше посочен проектът „Здраво Крижевци“.

Мултикултурализъм и междуотраслово сътрудничество: Сътрудничеството между представители на публичния, частния и гражданския сектор, както и обменът на добри практики между седемте партньорски държави, допринасят за иновации и за укрепване на устойчивостта към климатични предизвикателства.

Тези местни събития, чиито дати и локации варираха според партньорската държава, служиха като платформа за приемане на договорените заключения и за разработване на планове за изпълнение на целите на проекта в собствените им общини и градове. По този начин проектът EU-ECO създаде нова основа за дългосрочно сътрудничество и за укрепване на местните актьори в процеса на изграждане на зелено общество.
